Preparing a BARF diet at home requires careful planning and hygiene measures. Here are the key guidelines for safe and balanced feeding:

• Incorporate diversity:Use various types of muscle meat, offal (such as liver, kidney, spleen), raw meaty bones, as well as vegetables or fruits (optional for dogs, preferably avoid for cats).
• Rotate protein sources:Regularly switch between beef, poultry, fish, etc., to balance the amino acid and nutrient profile.
• Observe hygiene:Wash hands, tools, and surfaces thoroughly before and after contact with raw meat. Store meat at safe temperatures – in the refrigerator below 4 °C, in the freezer below -18 °C. Thawing should be done in the refrigerator, never at room temperature.
• Pay attention to the right ratio:Carefully analyze the meal and use supplements if necessary to close nutrient gaps. An imbalance is the biggest risk with self-assembled BARF rations. Consider consulting a nutritionist or a reliable BARF calculation tool.
• Avoid dangerous ingredients:No cooked bones – they can splinter. Toxic foods like onions, grapes, raisins, chocolate, macadamia nuts are off-limits. Fish should be frozen to kill parasites. Feed shellfish only cooked.
• Observe the health of the animal:Pay attention to stool consistency, skin and coat condition, weight, energy level. Have blood values checked regularly and adjust the ration as needed.

Best method:In the refrigerator

Remove the plastic packaging and place the product in a glass or porcelain container with a lid. Seal it tightly – oxygen inhibits the growth of anaerobic bacteria, while vacuum can promote it. Place the container in the refrigerator, ideally in the bottom shelf.

Make sure that the temperature of your refrigerator does not exceed +4 °C – for BARF, +2 °C is ideal, as bacteria multiply quickly at temperatures above 4 °C. The product takes about 12 hours to thaw completely.

Important:Never thaw at room temperature! If the product is left outside the refrigerator for too long, bacteria multiply quickly and strongly.

Allergies in dogs often manifest as itching, skin redness, paw licking, digestive problems, or ear infections. The causes can be diverse – from environmental irritants to food intolerances.

Important:Have the cause clarified by a veterinarian. In cases of food allergies, blood or skin tests are often unreliable. A reliable method is an elimination diet followed by provocation.

This is how an elimination diet works:

• Only feed a new protein source + a vegetable source.
• 6–8 weeks of observation, then gradually introduce new ingredients (Introduce only one new ingredient at a time. If there is no reaction within 5–7 days, the ingredient can be considered temporarily safe and remain in the feeding plan).
• Observe reactions
• No treats during the testing phase.
