Description

Animal fat- A natural energy source and a flavor enhancer: Fat supports healthy skin, a shiny coat, and helps with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). Especially important for active dogs and during the cold season.

Fat should make up 5–10% of the daily BARF ration, depending on energy needs and activity level.
A balanced fat content keeps dogs fit, happy, and full of energy!

In the BARF concept, fat is a central component – but it should be used with caution.

When fat should be added to BARF meals:

Active or working dogs
Dogs with high energy needs (e.g. sled dogs, agility, herding dogs) benefit from an increased fat content as an additional source of calories. Fat provides more than twice the energy of protein or carbohydrates.

Underweight dogs
If a dog is to gain weight healthily, fat is a safe and efficient way – as long as digestion is closely monitored.

Cold season
In winter, dogs burn more calories to maintain their body temperature. A slightly richer diet helps keep them warm and energized.

Very lean BARF meat
If the meat is extremely lean (e.g. rabbit, turkey breast, or game), fat should be added to avoid deficiencies.

Skin and coat health
Fat supports the skin, provides a shiny coat, and strengthens the immune system.

When one should be careful:

No overfeeding of fat for inactive, overweight, or pancreatitis-prone animals.

Too much fat can lead to digestive problems, diarrhea, or nutrient imbalance.

Always incorporate fat slowly and gradually into the diet.
